Hey folks,
I plan to install Crown Moulding in my 1910 New England Colonial. I’d like to use similar materials as the rest of the house, however was surprised when I went to home depot and lowes and found that none of their crown moulding was made of wood?!?! It was either vinyl/pvc, or some other material that I couldn’t identify.
They had some trim and casings made of wood, but not Crown Moulding.
Can you no longer find Crown Moulding made of wood?
Thanks!

I did a web search for "crown molding" and got pages of hits for common and custom moldings. I know my local Home Depot and Lowe’s both carry moldings of paint and stain grade wood, pvc, and some type of composite material. To exactly match what you’ve got now take a clear close up picture with you when you go shopping.

My dad (who is a carpenter) said that crown molding can be either made out of wood or plastic or a little bit of both. So you should be able to find some crown molding that is made out of wood. Maybe the place where you get your materials is just out of the wood kind of crown molding? You might want to look at other places that could possibly carry wood crown molding, or you could look online to see if they sell any there.

Most home improvement stores inventory mainly composites because they are cheaper both to manufacture and for the homeowner to purchase. You really have to find small specialty dealers to get any kind of selection of hardwood moldings, baseboards, wainscoting, etc. You can also have a finish carpenter replicate what you already have but that is even more expensive. You can also find online dealers that specialize in hardwood moldings, but you really need to know exactly what you need and they usually charge by the linear foot, so do the math so you have little waste.

yes you can find it. But it is higher priced

you might have to go to a lumber yard for the molding

Matching old molding may be a problem. You can find wood but when you do, you will see why plastic and even foam has become a big seller. The price will be extremely higher than the replacement materials.

It’s available, but more expensive. Call around. Try 84 Lumber.
